HOW CAN HOME-START HELP?

Every family is different and problems within each family are equally varied.  Some parents need support through difficult times such as separation or bereavement whilst others, having not had the opportunity of a stable childhood themselves, are struggling to understand how to provide their own children with appropriate parenting.  Yet others may need practical help on a short-term basis in order to cope with a child who is ill or has a disability.

Some parents have reached breaking point by the time contact is made with a Home-Start volunteer.  For most of them their life experiences have led them to have severely undermined confidence.  Their children are often unhappy and confused.

By sharing their time and friendship, volunteers offer families an opportunity to develop new relationships, ideas and skills.  This usually leads to renewed interest in the children, an improved response to their needs and greater confidence to avail themselves of other resources within their community.

The approach varies according to the needs of each family and draws on the flexibility, good humour and imaginative skills of the volunteer.

Home-Start offers parents the opportunity to talk about their lives with freedom and in confidence.
