                                 REFERRING A FAMILY

Families who accept the help of a Home-Start Bexley volunteer are usually referred by Health Visitors, Social Workers, Medical Social Workers, Community Psychiatric Nurses, GP’s, Psychiatrists, Church Ministers, Relatives, Friends and Voluntary Organisations.  Sometimes parents themselves seek help.

Standard referral forms are available on request by contacting Home-Start Bexley by calling Lisa on:

020 8302 8119 or e-mail  lisa@homestartbexley.freeserve.co.uk

The form should be completed and returned to the Home-Start office.  Each referral will be followed up by an assessment home visit by a Co-ordinator.

Reasons for referrals

The reasons for referral are as diverse as the families visited but broadly fall under the following headings:

Loneliness and isolation

Postnatal depression

Breakdown of relationships

Loss of job or home

Bereavement

Child with disabilities or special needs

Parent with physical or mental illness

Multiple births

Lack of appropriate parenting skills

Financial difficulties

Lone parent

On occasions a referral is received as a result of physical violence within the family home.  Home-Start Bexley is unable to accept such referrals if the perpetrator of the violence remains in the family home.  However, if the individual responsible for the violent acts has been removed or has voluntarily left the family home the referral can usually be accepted.
